The St. John Passion by J.S. Bach in this production by PODIUM Esslingen becomes an intense and captivating event, condensed to a team of a single singer, harpsichord and organ, and percussion. The Icelandic Tenor Benedikt Kristjánsson narrates the entire Passion from the point of view of the Evangelist, assuming different roles, singing the alto and soprano arias as well. The harpsichordist Elina Albach and the percussionist Philipp Lamprecht trace the movement of the orchestra with their richly-coloured arrangement. A new version is created - contemporary, and yet very respectful towards the original - which distills the entire drama of the Passion into a chamber music setting. The audience sings the chorales together with the musicians, as was common in the original performance practice of Bach’s time.

»Such an intensity and vehemence has not been seen in a long time: Bach’s St. John Passion as psychological chamber (music) play. Benedikt Kristjánsson is a once-in-a-lifetime tenor and an exceptional Evangelist […] courageous, fierce, and simply grandiose like the entire adaption«
